A Preferred Women’s Health Centers have offered medication abortion options for our patients for over 20 years! In 2000, we became one of the first medical facilities in the United States to provide abortion services with the use of medications only. Given the convenience and privacy of this treatment, medication abortion has become the preferred choice to terminate early pregnancies for many of our patients.

APWHC clinics use the FDA-approved regimen of mifepristone (sometimes known as Mifeprex or 'the abortion pill') and misoprostol to complete the medication abortion procedure. Following the recommendations of the National Abortion Federation and the medication manufacturers, we offer the medication abortion procedure as an option for patients up to 11 weeks.

During a medication abortion, a patient will be administered a dose of mifepristone in the clinic. This medication works by interrupting growth and stopping further development of the pregnancy.

Patients will be given misoprostol after they have taken mifepristone. This medication will induce a miscarriage, causing cramping and bleeding similar to a heavy period. If a patient does not experience any bleeding within 24 hours of taking the misoprostol, they should contact the clinic for further care instructions.

The abortion pill regimen we use at APWHC is very effective, though effectiveness can change slightly depending on how far along a patient is or how many doses of misoprostol they take.

  • At 8 weeks pregnant or less, it works about 94-98% of the time with one dose of misoprostol.
  • At 8-9 weeks pregnant, it works about 94-96% of the time with one dose of misoprostol.
  • At 9-10 weeks pregnant, it works about 99% of the time with two doses of misoprostol.
  • At 10-11 weeks pregnant, it works about 98% of the time with two doses of misoprostol.
